Dentures form plaque and tartar build up just like natural teeth. A Professional tartar and stain remover solution where dentures are cleaned is used in the ultrasonic machine and cleaned for approximately 20-30 minutes or more. Next, Dentures are brushed to remove any residual deposits or stain from your Denture.
Oral cancer is a disease resulting from abnormal cell growth in the mouth, lips, tongue or throat. In 2003, an estimated 3,100 new cases of oral cancers were identified in Canada, and about 1,090 deaths occurred as a result of the disease. People over the age of 45 are most at risk. The good news is that oral cancer can be treated successfully if diagnosed at early stage. As primary Oral Health Care professionals, Dental Hygienists play a vital role in early discovery through opportunistic screening, which can significantly reduce the mortality rate of oral cancer. A comprehensive extraoral and intraoral examination is done at Delburne Dental Hygiene to screen Oral Cancer and based on the result an appropriate referral will be done if needed.
At your first visit and on each visit to Delburne Dental Hygiene, a comprehensive oral assessment of your teeth and the soft tissues of your head and neck regions will be done before the cleaning. It is an important part of your Oral Health Care. During the Assessment the Dental Hygienist will review your medical history, including taking your vital signs and your dental history, will perform an Intra Oral exam, an Extra Oral one, a Periodontal Assessment including a mouth probing and will take X-rays when needed. Based on the results collected from the exams the Dental Hygienist will provide you with a Diagnosis and a Customized Care Plan made to meet your Oral health Care needs and will provide you Oral Health Instructions to help you improve your Oral Health. A referral to other Health Care Provider, including your dentist or physician will be done if necessary.
Smooth, shiny, stain-free teeth are a real confidence booster, and one way to achieve a bright, attractive smile is through tooth polishing. Tooth polishing is a painless dental procedure where the Dental Hygienist uses dental power tools with a soft rubber cup and polishing paste in order to remove bacterial plaque and stain from the tooth surface above the gum line. In addition to helping you maintain good Oral Healthcare, a simple cleaning makes your mouth feel really fresh.
Scaling is the most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. It is the removal of calculus (commonly called tartar) and plaque that attaches to the tooth surfaces above and below the gum line. Scaling will start after a complete evaluation of your gums and teeth made on your Oral Health Assessment. There are two types of scaling instruments. Depending on your need the Dental Hygienists may use both: Scaling with hand-held instruments- The Dental Hygienist will use a dental scaler and curette to manually remove (scale) the plaque and tartar from your teeth. Scaling with ultrasonic instruments-Ultrasonic scaling instruments clean plaque from the teeth with a vibrating metal tip that chips off the tartar and a water spray to wash it away and keep the tip cool.
Dental Sealants Dental sealant is a thin coating made from special plastic that is applied to the grooves to shield out bacteria. The back teeth are the ones that are most likely to show signs of decay, so it is important to take this extra step to help protect them. Sealant helps keep food particles and germs from getting stuck in the grooves of these teeth, which can cause decay. The sealant is usually applied as soon as your child's permanent molars come in between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. Once those molars have erupted, it is a good idea to have your Dental Hygienist apply the sealant as soon as possible. The procedure to apply dental sealant is often fast and painless. There is no drilling or removal of any part of the tooth structure during the process.
Sports guards is a device and vital part of your athletic equipment, that fit over your teeth that protects them, your mouth and jaw from injuries in all sports at all levels as: Hockey, soccer, football, rugby, martial arts, lacrosse, boxing, basketball, baseball, BMX, skateboarding, skiing snowboarding or any other activity that might result in an injury to the mouth. When you are hit in the mouth or jaw, a mouthguard acts as a cushion that redistributes the force of the blow, so the impact is absorbed more evenly. A mouthguard also provides a barrier between your teeth and the soft tissue in and around your mouth. Many studies have shown that mouthguards help prevent chipped or broken teeth and protect against cuts to lips, gums, and other soft tissue in the mouth area. You or your child has the option to personalizethe sportguard .Different colours, glitters, patterns and designs combinations can be choosen. Ask us about the options.
In most cases, the natural colour of teeth is within a range of light greyish-yellow shades. Teeth naturally darken with age and their appearance can be affected by the accumulation of surface stains acquired from the use of tobacco products and the consumption of certain foods or drinks. When it comes to whiter teeth, even those with an impeccable oral hygiene routine suffer from some level of discolouration eventually. With modern advances in the development of safe and effective teeth whitening systems, people can now have whiter and brighter smiles! After reviewing your medical/dental history, a comprehensive oral examination and all necessary assessments have been completed, the Dental Hygienist will determine if you a is a candidate for tooth whitening and will inform you. If you are a candidate, we can book you for 20 minute in office session using high concentrate bleaching gel and LED light to brighten your teeth with minimal tooth sensitivity.
Tooth sensitivity is a tooth discomfort in one or more teeth that happens after eating cold or hot foods or liquids or even breathing cold air. It is one of the most common complaints among dental patients. Most commonly, cases of tooth sensitivity are associated with erosion or gingival recession. When the hard enamel is worn down or gums have receded the porous dentin becomes exposed. The nerve endings in the dentin can be irritated by cold or hot temperatures, sweet or sour foods, as well as brushing or flossing. While the gnawing and uncomfortable pain of sensitive teeth can often be lessened by switching to desensitizing toothpastes or reducing acid consumption, sometimes sensitive teeth can only be adequately treated by a Dental Professional as a Dental Hygienist. After a complete evaluation and determination of the cause of your sensitivity the Dental Hygienist can decide to apply a desensitizer to help you with your sensitivity.
Fluoride is one of the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. Topical Fluoride has a higher strength than over-the-counter mouthwashes or toothpastes . Adults and children can enjoy its benefits. It helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. After a complete evaluation, including the risk for decays, the Dental Hygienist will inform you the need, the frequency and the type of Topical Fluoride application that meets your or your child need.
X-rays, also known as radiographs is a type of energy that passes through soft tissues and is absorbed by dense tissue. Teeth and bone are very dense, so they absorb X-rays, while X-rays pass more easily through gums and cheeks. It`s an essential part of any dental care treatment plan. They are diagnostic, but they can also be preventative, by helping the Dental Hygienist diagnose potential oral care issues in your mouth before they become a major problem. The X-rays helps the Dental Hygienist, but not limeted, to: diagnose cavities, check presence of tarter bellow your gum, check the health of the bony area around the tooth, to check on whether permanent teeth are developing (for children) and coming in properly, to check if any teeth are impacted (unable to come through the gums) and to determine if you have bone lost. Bone lost can have different causes and periodontitis is one of them. If not treated, the teeth may become loose and in danger of falling out. At Delburne Dental Hygiene your safety is very important to us. At Delburne Dental Hygiene we use digital X-rays and we you will be asked to use a a lead apron and a thyroid collar to protect you against radiation. X-rays will be taken only when necessary for an accurate dental assessment or diagnosis. All the x-rays taken can be forwarded with your permission and consent to a dentist or other health care provider.

Your Health

Dental Hygienists work with you to help keep your mouth healthy. Regular appointments with your Dental Hygienist can help you prevent or, if needed treat certain dental conditions such as:

It is an inflammation of the gingival tissues (gums) in the mouth. This inflammatory response is due to the body fighting an infection caused by bacteria in the tissues surrounding the teeth. Gingivitis can manifest itself in many ways, however, the most common symptoms are red, swollen or tender gums and bad breath. It’s most often discovered when patients notice red toothbrushes or floss indicating bleeding gums. Gingivitis is treatable, preventable and curable. However, if left untreated, it can lead to periodontitis or other health concerns. It is now accepted in health care communities that gum diseases may be a risk factor for a number of serious health conditions such as heart disease and stroke; pneumonia and other respiratory diseases; diabetes; and premature or low birth weight babies. Various treatment options are prescribed based on a number of individual factors including lifestyle, diet, oral care regime and personal health. The treatment for gum diseases depends on the severity of the affliction and on the individual patient. Some may just need regular cleaning and maintenance care, while others may need surgeries and medications.Wichever your need is, a visit to your Dental Hygienist is a good place to start.
Periodontitis is a serious infection of the gums. It’s caused by bacteria that have been allowed to accumulate on your teeth and gums. As periodontitis progresses, your bones and teeth can be damaged. However, if periodontitis is treated early and proper oral hygiene is maintained, the damage can be stopped. Most common symptoms are bad odours in the mouth, discolouration of gum tissue, bleeding, tender gums when brushing or flossing and mobility of some teeth (due to bone levels around roots being destroyed). When gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, treatment becomes much more complicated. Only your Dentist and Dental Hygienist can perform periodontal treatment, which involves special dental procedures and can require oral surgery. If your Dental Hygienist determines that you have periodontitis, the treatment will depend on the severity of the infection.
Halitosis or bad breath is the condition where an unpleasant odour emanates from the mouth. It is very often a side-effect of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Halitosis is caused primarily by volatile sulphur compounds produced by certain types of bacteria within the oral cavity. It can also be atributed to certain medical conditions or medications causing dry-mouth. Some common symptoms of bad breath include: bad breath smell, bad or sour taste in the mouth, dry mouth and a coating on the tongue.

Regular dental cleanings and other strategies can be used to reduce bad breath.
